Activated carbon
Activated carbon has a porous surface that can adsorb some dissolved substances. In planted glass, it is used sparingly alongside a suitable terrarium base and planting medium.
Where it belongs
A thin carbon layer can sit above a mineral false bottom in a planted jar, or small amounts can be mixed into the planting area. Leave enough depth for the roots and their growing medium.
What it cannot do
Carbon is not fertiliser and does not remedy overwatering, rotting roots or an overcrowded terrarium. Its capacity to adsorb substances is finite.
Before adding it
Rinse loose dust if required. Keep the container clean, remove decaying leaves and adjust moisture according to the plants and enclosure.
