Airflow & Drainage Substrate Set – ingredients for opening up dense soil
This set contains perlite, pine bark and lava rock as separate components. They are intended to be mixed through an existing suitable soil base, where they add space for air and help the potting medium maintain its structure.
What each ingredient contributes
- Perlite: keeps the blend light.
- Pine bark: adds larger organic pieces.
- Lava rock: adds mineral structure and pot weight.
- Mix throughout: a layer at the bottom does not fix compacted soil above it.
Where to start
Begin with a small structural blend of the three materials, then work it through an appropriate soil base. Adjust the finished texture to the plant’s root thickness, pot size and drying conditions.
What else you need
The three ingredients do not make a complete potting soil by themselves for most houseplants. Supply a suitable soil or moisture-holding base separately, mix a small batch and check that the resulting texture stays airy without losing root contact.
Storage and handling
Moisten dusty components before mixing. Keep unused materials clean and dry, and reduce oversized pieces if the pot is small.
