Dieffenbachia 'Amy'

Cultivation history of Dieffenbachia 'Amy'

‘Amy’ has been part of the commercial Dieffenbachia range since at least the early 2010s.

Caring for Dieffenbachia ‘Amy’

Place ‘Amy’ in bright indirect light, out of strong midday sun that can mark the broad leaves. Indoor temperatures of about 18–27 °C work well. Avoid prolonged temperatures below 15 °C, cold window glass, draughts and direct heater or air-conditioning blasts.

Average household humidity usually works well; aim for 50–60%. Keep the plant away from very dry heated airflow and use a humidifier where needed.

Dust the broad leaves with a damp cloth from time to time. Check the undersides and leaf bases as you do so.

Before watering, feel the top of the potting mix and lift the pot. If the surface has lost its wet feel and the container is noticeably lighter, water slowly until the mix is evenly moist around the roots, then allow it to drain completely. Empty any water left in a saucer or cover pot. An airy organic potting mix that holds some moisture without staying soggy suits this cycle.

While ‘Amy’ is actively growing, use a light dose of complete houseplant fertiliser.

When the root ball fills the container, increase pot size only a little. Replace mix that has become slow to drain. If the plant is unstable, choose a stable pot that fits its roots.

Propagation options: Use a healthy top cutting or sections of mature cane that contain nodes.

Common Problems with Dieffenbachia ‘Amy’

• Several leaves are turning yellow or drooping — Start by checking how wet the pot actually is. If the mix has dried too far, water through the whole root ball and let the excess escape. If it is still wet several days after the last watering, leave it alone, empty any collected water and make sure the pot can drain. Root inspection is only warranted if the yellowing keeps advancing while the root zone remains wet; firm pale roots are healthy, whereas dark soft roots indicate rot. The guide to yellow leaves covers other possible causes.
• Pale, tan or brown patches appear on one side of the plant — Compare the damaged area with where that leaf was positioned. A sunny window, cold glass or a recent draught can all cause local injury. Return ‘Amy’ to stable warmth with bright indirect light, and use the next leaves to judge whether the problem has stopped because existing patches will remain.
• The tips or edges keep turning brown — Work through watering, fertiliser build-up and dry airflow in that order. Even out the watering if the pot has been swinging between very dry and wet, flush the potting mix with fresh water when salts are likely, and keep the leaves away from heaters or air-conditioning. If fresh edge damage still appears in a heated room after those checks, a humidifier may help.
• White cottony patches appear in the leaf axils — Check the undersides, stems and tight leaf bases for mealybugs. Isolate the plant and inspect nearby plants. A few insects can be removed carefully with a cotton swab lightly moistened with household alcohol; keep alcohol off healthy leaf tissue. For a larger infestation, use a product labelled for mealybugs on indoor ornamental plants and follow the label exactly. The mealybug guide explains the full treatment process.

Dieffenbachia sap is irritating. Wear gloves when pruning, repotting or taking cuttings and keep sap away from the eyes and mouth. After skin contact, wash with soap and water for 15 minutes; if sap gets into an eye, rinse with clean water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or persist.
