Dieffenbachia ‘Big Ben’

Cultivated origin of Dieffenbachia ‘Big Ben’

‘Big Ben’ is a long-established Dieffenbachia cultivar that has appeared under more than one species name in the plant trade.

Care for a Large Dieffenbachia ‘Big Ben’

Give the large canopy plenty of bright indirect daylight. If most of the light comes from one direction, turn ‘Big Ben’ occasionally to keep the canopy balanced. Keep it warm and stable, and clear of cold windows, draughts and hot air outlets.

50–60% humidity is usually suitable; keep the plant away from dry airflow and use a humidifier in very dry rooms. Feed during active growth, and pause fertiliser if lower light or cooler conditions slow the plant and the pot remains wet for longer.

A deep container can dry unevenly, with the surface looking dry while the centre is still damp. Check farther into the mix and compare the pot’s weight before watering. When the mix deeper in the pot has started to dry and no longer feels wet, water all the way through and let the excess escape. A loose, airy potting mix is especially important at this size.

Move to a pot only slightly larger when the roots genuinely need more space. Wipe the broad leaves to keep them clean and easier to inspect.

Temperature: A range of 18–27 °C suits ‘Big Ben’. Extended periods below 15 °C are best avoided.

Propagation: Propagate from a healthy top cutting. Alternatively, from sections of mature cane that contain nodes.

Problems to Watch for on ‘Big Ben’

• Many tiny pale dots or a dull, bronzed look develop across the broad leaves — Check the undersides and veins for spider mites; fine webbing is another strong clue. Isolate the plant, rinse the foliage thoroughly on both sides and inspect nearby plants. If mites persist, use a treatment specifically labelled for spider mites on indoor ornamental plants. The spider-mite guide gives the full treatment sequence.
• Leaf tips or margins turn brown — On a plant with leaves this large, changes in moisture show quickly. Check for a pot that has become very dry, fertiliser salts in the mix and direct airflow from a heater or vent. Correct whichever cause fits; if salts are the likely problem, flush the mix and pause feeding. The brown-tip guide covers the main checks.
• Several leaves yellow and become soft — A large pot can stay wet deep inside even when the surface looks dry, while a crowded root system can dry unusually fast. Check moisture farther down before choosing the next step. Water deeply if the pot is genuinely dry; if the centre is wet, stop watering and make sure drainage is clear. Disturb the roots only if the decline continues under wet conditions.
• The plant becomes top-heavy with smaller leaves and longer gaps between them — Look at the light reaching the upper part of the plant. Growth that is leaning or stretching towards the window needs a gradual move into brighter indirect light, with the pot turned from time to time. Old long gaps cannot close, so assess the correction on later growth.

Dieffenbachia sap is irritating. Wear gloves for pruning and repotting and keep sap away from eyes and mouth. Wash skin contact with soap and water for 15 minutes; rinse an affected eye with clean water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or persistent.
