Philodendron ‘Congo Apple’

Cultivated origin of Philodendron ‘Congo Apple’

Philodendron ‘Congo Apple’ is a self-heading cultivar of undocumented origin. It is widely propagated through tissue culture.

Care for Philodendron ‘Congo Apple’

• Crown care: Remove trapped water and debris from the crowded leaf stalk bases, and leave lateral room for the broad crown to expand.
• Light: Provide medium to bright filtered light and rotate the pot periodically for balanced growth.
• Water: For ‘Congo Apple’, let part of the mix dry, then water completely and let the excess drain.
• Potting mix: Choose an airy mix that holds some moisture and drains reliably.
• Temperature and humidity: Hold the plant near 18–29 °C during normal growth. Shift it away from cold exposure when conditions fall close to 15 °C. Keep air moisture around 50–60%. Pair this with light air movement around the leaves.
• Feeding: During active growth, give a moderate complete feed. Lower the feeding frequency when the main growth flush finishes.
• Repotting: Use a slightly larger pot when the roots fill the current container. For slower drainage, inspect the holes and replace compacted mix as needed. If the crown makes the plant unstable, choose a heavier container that still fits the roots.
• Propagation: Use a rooted basal shoot or a healthy stem section that includes a node.

Recognising and correcting problems in Philodendron ‘Congo Apple’

• An apple-green leaf gradually deepens in colour: This can be normal as long as the blade remains firm and the plant grows well. Compare leaves of different ages before changing care.
• The crown becomes pale or leans to one side: Uneven or insufficient light can affect this free-standing plant. Rotate the pot gradually and improve filtered light where needed. Consider feeding only when roots are healthy and the plant is actively growing.
• Leaves yellow or wilt while the mix stays wet: Pause watering and check drainage. If decline continues, inspect roots, keeping every firm root and removing only clearly rotten soft tissue with clean tools. Replace collapsed mix with an airy, freely draining substrate. If the crown or base turns soft or foul, retain only firm healthy tissue; discard the plant if none remains.
• A crown patch becomes wet, soft or enlarges: A fixed dry mark can be caused by rubbing; monitor it without aggressive treatment. Water-soaked or spreading damage needs isolation, dry foliage and improved airflow. Remove severely affected tissue with clean tools and obtain a reliable diagnosis before disease-specific chemicals.
• New growth scars or cottony, sticky or webbed patches appear: Silvered or distorted new growth can indicate thrips; stippling and webbing suggest spider mites; cottony clusters mealybugs and attached shells with sticky residue scale. Check both leaf surfaces and petiole bases, isolate affected plants, remove visible pests and use a houseplant product labelled for the confirmed pest, following its repeat schedule. Raising humidity alone will not control an infestation. For identification and treatment, see the thrips guide and the spider-mite guide.

Philodendron ‘Congo Apple’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

How did Philodendron get its name?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
