Philodendron ‘Little Phil’

Origin of Philodendron ‘Little Phil’

‘Little Phil’ is the trade name used for the compact cultivar ‘PHIL01’. It was selected in January 2009 from a commercial Philodendron crop in Doonan, Queensland, Australia; its parentage remains unknown.

The selection was first propagated in 2010 and later protected as ‘PHIL01’ after its compact form proved stable through repeated asexual propagation.

Day-to-day care for Philodendron ‘Little Phil’

• Crown care: Remove old leaf-base material and debris only after they are dry and loose so the compact centre stays open to airflow.
• Light: Use moderate to bright filtered light and increase exposure gradually after moving the plant from a dimmer position.
• Watering cue: Check the small root ball before watering. Water thoroughly when the upper mix has begun to dry, then let the excess drain.
• Pot and potting mix: Use a pot only slightly larger than the root ball and an airy mix that retains a little moisture between waterings.
• Temperature and humidity: Use about 18–29 °C for routine growth and protect it from extended periods under 15 °C. A 50–60% humidity range suits it.
• Feeding: During active growth, give a restrained complete houseplant feed. Feed less after the current flush of growth finishes.
• Repotting cue: Repot when roots fill the container, moving up only slightly in pot size. Repot if the roots fill the container, drainage through the mix slows, or the plant loses stability.
• Propagation: Take a rooted basal shoot when one forms, or root a healthy stem section that keeps a node.

When Philodendron ‘Little Phil’ starts to struggle

• Growth slows for an extended period: Check both light and root space. A healthy plant in a dim position can be moved gradually into brighter filtered light. If roots occupy most of the pot and growth has stalled, move up one pot size with fresh airy substrate
• Leaves yellow and the small pot stays heavy: Pause watering until the upper mix has dried more and clear any blocked drainage. If the plant still droops, inspect the compact root ball. Keep all firm roots intact. If root sections are clearly rotten and soft, cut only those back to healthy tissue with disinfected scissors and discard them. Replace collapsed substrate when necessary before repotting.
• Cottony clusters collect inside the crown: Separate the plant from nearby foliage, remove visible mealybugs and use a houseplant treatment labelled for them. Repeat it at the stated interval and keep checking the tight inner growth; the mealybug guide shows the hidden areas worth checking
• A leaf creases as it opens: Crowding or contact can mark soft tissue. Leave a healthy creased leaf in place and clear a route for the next one without pulling at growth that is still unfurling

Philodendron ‘Little Phil’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Philodendron: where the name comes from

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
