Philodendron mexicanum

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron mexicanum

Philodendron mexicanum occurs naturally from Mexico through parts of Central America to western Colombia. It is a climbing species of wet tropical forest.

How to care for Philodendron mexicanum

• Support: Train the stem onto a firm pole or plank and attach it at the nodes as it rises.
• Light: Bright diffused light supports compact growth and mature leaf development.
• Humidity: Maintain ambient humidity at roughly 50–60% where practical. Gentle airflow around the foliage helps moisture clear.
• Watering: Water when the surface is just dry, then empty excess water from the saucer or cover pot.
• Potting mix: Use an open mix that holds some moisture with coarse materials such as bark, pumice or lava rock.
• Temperature: For steady growth, hold temperatures near 18–29 °C and protect the plant from prolonged conditions under 15 °C. Keep the plant away from cold window glass.
• Feeding: Use a general houseplant fertiliser lightly while the vine is actively growing. As growth slows, cut back or pause feeding.
• Repotting: Repot after the root ball becomes densely packed, using a container only slightly larger. Secure the support independently if the plant becomes unstable.
• Propagation: Use a healthy node-bearing stem section for propagation and retain any aerial root already growing from that node.

Problems and solutions for Philodendron mexicanum

• An established climber begins producing smaller, weaker leaves: Check that the stem is still attached to firm support and that the light level remains high enough for active growth. For advice on choosing a position, see the bright indirect light guide.
• Fine webbing, stippling or mealy deposits appear: Inspect leaf undersides and nodes for moving spider mites, fine webbing or cottony mealybugs. If pests are confirmed, keep the plant separate, remove visible insects and use only a treatment labelled for the identified pest on indoor ornamental plants. Follow the label for repeat applications. For identification and treatment, see the mealybug guide.
• Leaves wilt while the substrate stays heavy and wet: Pause watering and check the drainage. If wilting continues, inspect the roots and retain all firm sections. Cut only clearly rotten, soft tissue back to healthy growth with disinfected scissors and discard the decayed parts. Retain firm roots and repot into fresh airy mix only when the current substrate has compacted.

Philodendron mexicanum is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

The meaning and history of Philodendron mexicanum

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The epithet mexicanum means from Mexico.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler first described Philodendron mexicanum in 1878 in Flora Brasiliensis, volume 3, issue 2, page 143.
