Philodendron rugosum aberrant form

Cultivated form and natural range of Philodendron rugosum aberrant form

This cultivated aberrant form belongs to Philodendron rugosum, which is native to southern Colombia and Ecuador.

Its exact horticultural origin is still uncertain.

Philodendron rugosum aberrant form care

• Support and clearance: Give the climbing stem stable support and leave enough room around the growing point for irregular leaves to open freely.
• Light: Give it bright indirect light and keep developing folded leaves out of strong direct sun.
• Humidity: Maintain the growing area close to 50–60% humidity. Air should still move lightly around the plant. Airflow matters around the deep folds, where moisture can otherwise linger.
• Watering: Let the upper layer of the potting mix begin to dry before watering thoroughly. Avoid keeping the root ball continuously wet.
• Potting mix: Use a chunky, airy aroid mix that retains some moisture without staying dense.
• Temperature: Maintain 18–29 °C and move the plant away from positions that remain below 15 °C.
• Feeding: During fresh leaf and stem development, give a restrained complete houseplant feed; then pause or reduce feeding when growth loses momentum.
• Repotting: Repot into a slightly larger pot when roots crowd the container. Keep the support secure and the pot stable.
• Propagation: Choose a healthy section of stem with a node; an existing aerial root can help it root more quickly.

Common problems with Philodendron rugosum aberrant form

• New tissue turns soft: Check the stem and roots for mushy or sour-smelling tissue. If tissue is clearly rotten and soft, cut only those sections back to firm, healthy growth using a disinfected blade and discard the decayed material. Use our root rot guide for the recovery steps.
• Fine stippling appears inside the folds: Inspect closely for spider mites and faint webbing. If you find them, isolate the plant and follow our spider mite guide.
• A folded new leaf stays closed: Check root-ball moisture and humidity and look for pests in the folded new growth. Give the leaf time to open naturally, without pulling it apart. If the problem recurs, check whether roots are firm and new leaves show mite damage or signs of repeated drying.

Philodendron rugosum aberrant form is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

When was Philodendron rugosum first published, and what does it mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The Latin adjective rugosum means wrinkled or strongly ridged, directly describing the mature leaf surface.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Josef Bogner and George Sydney Bunting first described Philodendron rugosum in 1983 in Willdenowia, volume 13, page 183.
