Philodendron ‘Sunlight’

Origin of Philodendron ‘Sunlight’

The breeder, parentage and original introduction are unknown.

Indoor care for Philodendron ‘Sunlight’

• Crown space: Give the broad leaves room to open, remove debris between the leaf stalks and turn the pot occasionally if a one-sided light source is pulling the crown off centre.
• Light: Keep the centre in bright filtered light so soft red leaves can expand without being scorched by strong direct sun.
• Watering: After part of the mix has dried, water the root ball evenly and drain the pot fully.
• Potting mix: Use a loose, airy aroid mix that drains freely while holding some moisture.
• Temperature and humidity: Aim for 18–29 °C during normal growth and protect it from sustained temperatures below 15 °C. Aim for 50–60% humidity.
• Feeding: During new foliage production, use complete fertiliser at a measured rate. Feed less frequently through periods of slower growth.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container. If the pot stays heavy for many days, check its drainage and the condition of the mix; replace compacted mix at repotting. Increase pot size only when roots need more room.
• Propagation: Separate a basal shoot after it roots, or take a healthy stem section with at least one node.

Philodendron ‘Sunlight’: common issues

• New leaves are smaller or the crown begins to stretch: Check the light level and root condition first. Move the plant gradually to a brighter filtered position if the room is dim. If the pot stays heavy and the roots are unhealthy, restore drainage and repot into a loose airy mix before changing the feeding routine.
• Red new foliage becomes green: Mature leaves are expected to settle green as the next red leaf forms in the centre. No treatment is needed for a firm healthy leaf.
• A dry pale patch forms on the exposed side: Strong direct sun or heat through glass is the likely cause when damage lines up with that side. Reduce the exposure, move the pot back if needed and keep the next soft leaf in filtered light.
• Fresh growth shows silver scars or black specks: Inspect the folded leaf for thrips. If live thrips are found, isolate the plant, remove accessible insects and use a product currently labelled for thrips on indoor ornamentals, following the label for repeat treatment.
• The plant feels soft while the mix remains wet: Let the root zone dry and verify that runoff can leave the pot. If firmness does not return, inspect the roots and keep all firm sections. Cut only clearly rotten, soft root tissue back to healthy growth with disinfected scissors and discard the decayed parts. Repot the firm root system in fresh, airy substrate if the old mix has broken down before returning to the normal watering rhythm.

Philodendron ‘Sunlight’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

What does Philodendron mean, and who first published it?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
