Worm castings – organic amendment for potting mixes
Worm castings are a fine, nutrient-containing organic material for adding to suitable potting mixes. A little can contribute organic matter, but large amounts also change how tightly the soil packs and how long it stays damp.
What they add
- Organic matter: a small addition to a home-made soil recipe.
- Some nutrients: background nutrition without replacing a complete feeding plan.
- Fine texture: blends into soil but can reduce air spaces if overused.
- Not for nutrient-poor systems: avoid carnivorous plants and other very lean media.
How to mix them
Add a modest amount to the potting mix and distribute it evenly before planting. Combine with suitable coarse or mineral materials if the mix needs to stay airy. Follow the actual product label for quantities; the right share depends on the finished substrate and plant.
After potting
Water according to the whole mix, pot size and roots. Worm castings can contribute some nutrition, but plants with higher nutrient needs may still require a suitable fertiliser. Keep remaining castings sealed, protected from excess moisture and out of reach of children and pets.
